Yeah, try to keep it r-12 if it still works. Must be a post 85 vanagon. On
ebay you can buy r-12 for about $20/12 0z.can, I think.Get a can with oil
in the freon, and a can without oil. You need to fill out a form that says
that your pruchace is for resale, to be legal.They have the forms. A dry
system needs 48 ounces. If yours still cools some, you may need about a can
or 2.  Buy a charging hose on ebay too.Get one with quick release
fittings !!Charge, with the compressor running, till the bubbles are gone
from the sight glass . The sight glass is on the reciever in the left front
wheel well. Remove the reciever from the clamp to see the sight glass,which
is on top.Total cost  will be about $60 for ebay stuff.
