Have you looked into Verizon's "North America Calling Plan"? Last summer, my wife and I switched our Verizon service from "America's Choice" to the "North America Calling Plan" when our travels took us into Canada for almost 2 months. Switching to it and back to the original plan is a bit of a pain but worth it if you will be travelling in an area with cell phone service. While we were mostly in areas without service, the ability to use the cell phone did come in very handy when several at home "family emergencies" surfaced.
