Zoltan, Shawn and BenT,

Thank you for setting me straight. I'm embarassed that i did not notice the nut earlier. Found the nut and finished the job this evening. Your help is much appreciated.

The old starter motor froze-up as my wife and kids were leaving Kaiser in Oakland. A good portion of the starter's gear was ground away. Photos of the flywheel, however, suggest it survived...i hope.

Another Vanagon back on the road again, walter

Thanks Zoltan,

i'll go hunting for the nut after work (~6:30pm). you are right, the area is densely populated with stuff and in my rush i didn't notice a nut or anything protruding from the bell-housing.

Regards, walter

Zoltan <zolo@foxinternet.net> wrote: There is none. The top bolt has to have a nut on the other side, use 17mm wrench for that. If you are changing starter, you took off that nut from that bolt. That is just behind the throttle valve. Tight space, the air filter housing with the AFM had to come off. And even then only can get to barely and turn less than a quarter. I often have a hard time to install the nut by hand first. I place it on the face of the engine side and screw the bolt in with my left hand from behind at the starter. Now, one thing. You can't put the other bolt in first. First the top long bolt has to go in, otherwise the top bolt can not go in from the ridge on the starter restricting it. At least you must loosen the bottom bolt very much to be able to have an angle that would let the long bolt slide in the engine side hole through, so you can see it come through at the throttle valve. Its something we find out as we are struggling with the job. Zoltan

The starter is not the problem. The problem is that the top bolt is not finding a thread to screw into. is this possible ?

i've pulled the starter and pocked the long bolt into the housing/engine and it slides in all the way without finding a mating thread.

Zoltan <zolo@foxinternet.net> wrote: Well, the top bolt is a long one that you can turn with an allen key at the head of it. The top side of the starter has to have a hole for that. I hope, it is not broken off. You need both bolts for strength. That starter is powerful. But you can see if all is well or not if you just take a good peep.
