Well not all vw distributors are the same. during assembly i tend to install the dist drive gear and point the rotor in the firing of #1 and then install the crank with #1 rod out. then gently spin the crank to drop in the cam. Well the type 1 Distributor that ive used for many many motor builds is NOT the same as the 1.9L vanagon dist. so apparently the rotor is about 90 degrees off from one to the other. Not a biggie just pull the drive gear and spin it 90 Deg and drop it back in TADA. Well lets Oops again i had the crank on BTDC not TDC. So now im simply 180 deg out. SOOOO put the gear rotate Crank to TDC then drop in the gear one last time. Cranked the beast and it sputtered so i spun the dist. just a bit more advanced and shebang it was off and running. did a quick check the timing at idle not warm then ran her up to 3k to try and break in the new pistons and cyl. Oil pressure was fantastic with no oil or water leaks anywhere. I had it on the 3 k mark for about 5-7 min is all then shut her down. checked temp on the exhaust pipes and all where in the same temp range so i know im firing on all cyl. it sounded Clean and smooth with plenty of power but. just as i was getting ready to drop to idle i noticed a bit of a sputter. like a cylinder was dropping off. Ive had issues in the past with over charging lifters. it sounded like that but ive not had it running more then the 5-7 min. Not concerned as of yet but will see when i play with it again tomarrow.

So i guess ive got a quick question What is the break in time for a 1.9L? and any special things to look for during break in.
