Don't go backwards with a carb. I vote for Megasquirt too.

For less than the cost of a rebuilt AFM you can get fully programmable fuel and spark control. The system is speed density, so no AFM is needed. The ignition driver is on-board, so no funky expensive VAG parts there either. The MAP sensor is built onto the board. If you don't like soldering you can get these kits pre-built. Anyone capable of doing an engine swap can figure it out. I have no affiliation with MS, just a satisfied customer. www.megasquirt.info

If the ONLY problem you are having is fuel injection issues, I would strongly suggest looking into megasquirting the van. With megasquirt, you are in control of fuel and spark. Running the engine rich to cool it down a bit is just a mousclick away.
