The sight glass is usually part of the receiver/dryer. It works for R12 which is a single chemical compound, but not for R134a and others which are blends. The R/D on my syncro westy is in the LR wheel well, but I've never cleaned it off to check. I don't know, either, if newer R/Ds omit the sight glass since it is of no use anymore.
