Yeah, I always get a laugh out of this story. You can tell he's trying to
spin it as "oh no! look what horrible thing s happened to us", when the REAL
story between the lines positively SCREAMS "look at how many stupid
decisions we were able to pack into one honeymoon".

-Having no mechanical aptitude whatsoever, buy a 20 year old VW
-...a 20 year old VW with a Nissan engine, that is!
-not asking why the guy who built it felt the need to send along a spare
alternator
-driving around without a working alternator light (or not knowing what it
is) after conspicuously being given such a spare
-parking in the sand when everyone else conspicuously ISN'T
-being surprised by snow at high altitude in September
-continuing blindly along  into said snow down a STEEP GRADE without chains
despite OBVIOUSLY freezing weather

Part of the problem, I think, is that they do indeed seem to be snotty
children who were expecting a turnkey re-engined Vanagon, but ended up with
a turkey re-engined Vanagon. They should have gone with a GoWesty. Then
again, I think they got exactly what they deserved. I feel sorry for that
poor '84 Westy, but not THEM. I think the perfect illustration of their
bratty attitude is that snide comment about "levels of stupidity in this
country" and he thought the best example was the tow truck driver's wife not
knowing how far they drove? Gimme a break. Why don't you ask your precious
Raegan in her "Made in Vagina" shirt how far up the mountain y'all drove
before heading down the other side in freezing conditions?
A close second was:
"Snow in September, no public transportation, what kind of place is this?"
Raegan says.
"You're in Wyoming, now," he [the cop] says.
You just know the cop was supressing a further comment like "this ain't
disneyworld, you Massachusetts snobs. This is the REAL WORLD."

That poor, poor westy. sniff.
