The two caps are virtually identical looking. The difference is the thread pitch, but it is such a small difference that I cannot even tell from looking at them side by side. On an '87, our website lists the alleged break point where the thread pitch changed, by the Westfalia (not VW) serial number, located on a plate on the sofabed base, as per the VW fiche. However, I had one customer whose serial number was rather close to that break point, and should have needed a later cap, but needed an earlier one. I don't know if his situation was unique for some reason, or if the fiche is a bit off on the break point.
