i gotta chime in here... i lived at the center of the universe (95389) for a few summers. I saw my share of bears and their tendency for vehicles.

first place, bears can rock climb very well. They have the first pitch (~150') of The Regular Route on Half Dome nailed. I have pictures to prove it too. (that pitch is a solid .10+ at least).

Second, bears go for certain vehicles. So one night it may JUST be dodge caravans, and the next night just honda accords. In the mid 90s, bears tuna'canning cars was VERY common. BUT in all of this, I NEVER EVER EVER saw or heard of a vw bus being tuna'canned. Ever.

I think this was due not just to good karma of vw bus owners everywhere, but to the door and frame design. The Caravan-like cars have the door overlap the body, so a bear can use their can-opener like nails to just rip that door piece down. BUT the vanagon and type-2 doors fit into a door jamb, inhibiting any easy entry.

they did go through windows too, but was less common.

ok, back to work. cheers matthew
