thanks guys. I did figure this out. the compressor was rather stiff, i did have to lossen the bottom pivot as to get the belt on/off not only did the compressor need to pivot but the "goofy" tension arm thingy assembly had to pivot too. my is a SD708, so maybe it's slightly different!?!? Only took me 3 hours to change three belts (stupid vanagon!)...
