Gregor, I had a similar symptom with my 84 automatic westy. First I though it was the brake but it turns out to be some pins that goes from the inside of the motor core to the torque plate. Each time I was applying the brake it made the torque plate hit the pins. My mechanic told me that those pins where part of a sensor of some sort used to time the motor. It is not use anymore (don't know why) and can be punch out from the core. Once removed my west was running fine again Good luck JP Montreal
