Subject: Info for newbies (+ my LP .02 after archive search.....)

Hi all.

Just a note to newbies; LP or otherwise.

Search the archives. My gawd. Lots of info there. Take the time and be creative with search terms.

My take on the LP (propane) tank.

*IF* your tank has no rust holes (check ID plate area on older tanks) you may be able to have tank refurbished by a pro or DIY. It appears that leaks happen most often at/on the regulator, autofill valve etc. and not as often on the tank itself. The aforementioned can be replaced with aftermarket parts.

So in a nutshell?

If your tank has visible rust (likely) don't assume that it is "done for", "toast", or ready for recycling. It may not be. Remove it, remove the rust, have it inspected if need be, and spot welded if poss., replace parts as needed and prep and paint it with correct materials. Haven't done mine yet (preventitive maint. in my case) but it looks pretty simple. If you do it right, you could save yourself bucks, and gain piece of mind/knowledge/confidence in what's going on down south on the port side. And in all likely-hood, you will give your LP tank a second lease on life!

Cheers.

Neil.
