When I lived in E. TN. we installed a 'whole house fan' in the central passageway of the house. The idea was that there would be times of day when it was hotter in the house than outside, so you'd pull the outside air in to cool it down or at least even it out- the 'exhaust' went into the attic and displaced the hot air built up in there which exhausted thru the vents which in turn further cooled the house. You'd run the fan in the morning and in the evening and use the A/C during the hottest part of the day. This also had the benefit of thoroughly airing out the house. I was skeptical about it at first but it worked very well in the humid environment. Here (SoCal desert) you have the variation of using a swamp cooler to push outside air in, and upducts in the ceiling to vent that air into the attic for the same reasons as the other.
