Good raw switched power comes in to the ignition coil by a black wire from the key switch. Don't add any real load to that wire though and remember that it is unfused all the way back to the battery. Use it to control a relay wired to a high current source like the alternator lug, just as VW did. Why not leave the relay box and relays and use them? Unlike VW, I would add fuses.
