Ken is 99.9% right.

If one searches the archives for posts on cooling capacity by Frank Grunthaner, there is a long post which discussed the cooling capacity of the Vanagon system relative to the needs of the Vanagon engine. It gives calculations and formulas on how to evaluate this. The system has far more capacity than is needed for the engine.

However, the plastic and metal pipes make a very small contribution to the calculation because their insides generate less friction for the flowing coolant that do rubber hoses. Repeat, very small. The added friction of all rubber hoses would not reduce the capacity that significantly. Also remember that rubber hoses are used for the heating system.

Frank's post also explains in some detail why cooler is not better and there are optimal temperature ranges for the operation of the engine.
