The book rate for an engine replacement, Syncro with AC is ~16 hours. This includes transferring or replacing everything on it plus all the time needed to make it run properly. You are looking at two engine removals, and one installation. Some components will have to swap such as the front exhaust pipe and the rear engine carrier, (yes the Syncro carrier is different). You may also want to swap the t-stat housing and the rear crank pulley seal set. Also add money for hoses. Depending on what parts do not need service, time needed will vary. Is the GL in very good condition? Maybe sell it and use the money for replacing the Syncro engine.

I just picked up an 87 vanagon gl with 30k on a new 2.1 engine that I'd like to put in my 86 snycro that currently apparently has busted cylinder head studs.

Anyone have a guesstimate on hours/cost for the switch? - I think the switch is beyond my capabilities at this point, though I'd love to watch the mechanic do it. (and i wouldn't ask too many annoying questions!). If I had the resources I'd have Karl throw a TDI in the syncro but I'm still saving my pennies for that project.

cheers,

chris
