Sure, it could be done on the front battery models but there would be a bit more involved. On those VW did not run the charging wire from the alternator to the battery but instead to the starter, where the main starter cable then conducts charging current forward from there to the battery, and starting current in the reverse direction during starting. Also VW used the alternator output lug as the connection point for the main fuel injection power wire(s), not to the battery itself or to the vehicle main harness. Anyone attempting what you did on these models would have to know what they were doing or very bad things could happen.
