Chris, Was the doner vehicle free, if not what did you pay for it? Seems the money in the donor cost as well as the labor to pull from it should have gone toward a new tranmission. They can be had for $1200US. I buy my own parts for my own work. My one mechanic is a great guy and did a full AC rebuild on another car with parts I supplied. My rebuilt compressor was 1/2 the price of his. He told me he would not warrenty the work with parts not from him. Seemed acceptable since it was saving $400. Guess what compressor went back to the rebuilt company? The one I bought. It was a shit rebuild and I had to pay for the labor to remove it and reinstall it again! I learned my lesson, the big stuff we need to dig deep for. If the pocket book is that tight then it's time to learn how to to drop a transmission! If you are really hard up for a mechianc and he is the ONLY one in the area then you may need to caugh up the money if the problems are solved on good faith. It sounds like the used part (as Dennis said) "looked" ok but was internally bad. Thus it is not the old guy's fault.
