If over-tightened, they can crack around the threads. The o-ring hardens, so may need a new one. The sensor can also leak through the conductors, which is evident if the wire connector is wet. Sealing the bottoms of the conductors (part in the tank) with epoxy will work, provided you leave some metal exposed at the ends. They are cheap to replace though, and same as used on A2 Golf/Jettas, so easy to find. Be sure to get a new o-ring, and lube with vaseline. I've had all of the above occur at various times on my Westy and Jettas...
