A few months ago I installed a deep cycle battery as an auxillery under the drivers seat. The battery has a vent kit option that has a small plastic tube that vents the gasses to the exterior. Very simple solution which requires only a small hole to be drilled thru the battery box. The tube was then zip-tied to to the frame to secure it from flopping around. I plan on doing the same when my starting battery goes belly-up. The big vents will be sealed off after I run the tube thru, which will keep the battery compartment dust-free and probably a bit warmer in the winter. And one less place for the mice to get in the Vanagon!
