This item is pretty much a carry over from the 60s before the days of the sealed batteries such as we have now. You know, back in the days when "acid" was much more of an issue! (Sorry, I just could not resist the last.)

Is a battery mat necessary? I called my local auto stores and no one has. Seems like this mat is only available on-line. A clerk said it wasn't necessary as vw batteries vent hydrogen to outside and just to put vasoline on terminals. Curious...
