Just get him a little direct drive bike with training wheels Phil. The
wheels will give him a chance to learn about speed and distance separately
from balancing.
This will save you money at the dentist.
As he progresses you can set the training wheels a little higher so that he
can balance the bike in a straight line. Pretty soon, he's on his own. He'll
probably let you know when he's ready.
