No, the "silver socket" is quite a bit smaller than the cig lighter, and the VW lighter seems to be a bit larger than others, so that it doesn't hold appliance plugs very snugly. Since I use the cigarette lighter socket for power, and not for an actual lighter, I replaced mine with a power outlet from Radio Shack. It fit almost perfectly. The only thing I had to do was use a file to make a small notch outside the mounting hole where a tab in the socket fits. I kept the original wiring and used one of those crimp-on quick-connects to wire it to the cig lighter wiring.
