I don't have any advice for ya, I taught myself, without training wheels, on a pedaled-scooter thing (castoff from an older sibling). I was able to put my feet down flat on this thing to stop it.

My test track was the sloped, paved parking lot for the apartment building next door to my house... no padding, and a nice brick wall at the bottom to catch me if I ran away. Somehow, I survived the experience and learned the balance trick... and ya know what? I never forgot.
