Jim, Jake and others with this problem... It's probably not gunk but
rather a failing capacitor.  See this website for the fix...

I did this last winter using the prescribed Radio Shack parts and even
the peanut can work support.  Nuthin' too it.  My ('84) clock used to
stop every cool night and not get going until we were on the road an
hour or so.  Now it runs 24/7 all year long.
