1) I would repalce the gaskets with the later-no groove style. Simply pulling the lock strip out of old, tired gaskets may cause them to leak.

2) Even with re-gearing the transmission, you will not see 26 MPG with the Syncro and the SVX. Maybe a 5-10% improvement mostly due to better technology. The Syncro is a relaticvely high friction machine and the wind resistance is the big fuel consumer. It would take a really well tuned, driven gently Diesel to see that type of mileage sometimes.
