Mornin' Sam,

I just replaced an axle flange seal last night. Again. For the third time, due to my own ham-handed mechanical idiocy...

From what I've gathered from venerable list members, there are two main ways that leaks develop here:

One is from the little cap that's glued onto the center part of the assembly. If that cap leaks, then transmission fluid flows out into the CV boot and eventually liquifies your CV grease.

The other way is from a bad seal, and the transmission fluid leaks out from the bottom or sides.

Remove the CV joint, then removed the little cap (green or blue, usually) by poking a hole in it with a screwdriver or seal puller, then pry it off. There's a snapring in there that will need to come off, and a washer behind the snapring. Then the whole piece that the CV bolts into should slide right off. Remove the plastic shroud by unscrewing the two phillips head screws on either side, then pull that off.

The seal is then exposed. Use a seal puller and be VERY CAREFUL not to score the walls where the seal sits. I used a f*&&king screwdriver when I did mine the first time and got a nice scratch that created a leak.

Clean, tap your new seal in, and put it back together. I used RTV to glue a new little plastic cap on.

Fill with Redline and be on your way.

If my procedure is off, List, please feel free to interject (I know you will!)

Joe T.
