Well it happened... my main transportation (1995 Mercury Sable) croaked on the way home from vacation. The a/c compressor jammed and threw off the serpentine belt. I did not even have the a/c on but apparently it runs (and thus wears) all the time. The single belt runs everything: a/c, alternator, power steering, water pump, engine timing, you name it ... what a design, I guess Ford never heard of fail-safe? The repair estimate was $1600 (extensive dismantling required just to get to the compressor) and the car in a repair shop miles from my home, so I decided to junk the car. ... which leads me to the Vanagon part, my backup transportation is my 1987 Wolfsburg with non-working a/c. I live in Phoenix and its now around 110-115 every day so I need it bad. My question how much should it cost to get a Vanagon a/c working. It did work a few years ago and then just stopped blowing cold. Can a regular a/c shop work on it or is it so unusual I should try to find a Vanagon-savvy mechanic?

David, Phoenix, AZ '87 Wolfsburg
