As for the goop, I cannot say for sure. Until Robert Feller mentioned seeing it on his fuel line, I thought it was just something I'd spilled! It's puzzling because both the fuel line and sleeving I used came as one long continuous piece, which I cut to the lengths I needed; and yet the only section of line with the "goop" issue was the one piece running past the breather tower behind the alternator. I still don't have the slightest idea what the "goop" is. Even my infamous "taste test" is of little help-- it just tastes bitter and vaguey chemically, not at all like gasoline. I don't even know if the sleeve material had anything to do with it. All I can say is keep a sharp eye on your new lines for a little while, and check all the hose clamps periodically. The issue of "goop" aside, this is probably a good idea anyway. I can't imagine anything worse than an engine fire caused by an under-tightened hose clamp after replacing the fuel lines to reduce the risk of engine fire. -- John Bange '90 Vanagon - "Geldsauger" |
