Subject:      Possessed Temp Gauge

So I'm driving along on the highway today on the way to buy a new
cooler for High Country and I look down and the temp gauge is pegged
and the led is flashing (Cue Psycho theme music).  I was only about
500 yards from my exit so I decided to roll the dice and try and make
it, well as I'm coming up the off ramp the led goes out and the temp
returns to normal, and it did this a couple of more times on the way
home as well.  It's done this before in the past but usually when its
cold outside.
As far as I can tell it's not actually a cooling issue but an
electrical or sensor issue but I may be wrong.
Any idea what causes this?
