Robert,

Something came to mind regarding your temperature problem that I don't think anyone's mentioned.... the voltage regulator for the gauges. There is a small, square IC on the back of the instrument cluster which is supposed to take 12V to 10V for the dash instruments. I had two of these things fail in my 1983, one time both the fuel gauge and temperature gauge read high, the other failure the received 0 voltage and didn't read at all. I suggest checking the voltage as the gauges, and verify that you're seeing 10V and not 12V before you get on an adventure with the cooling system. --
