I thought this too, but when fixing a thermostat housing leak, I removed the temp II sensor and put it in boiling water and room temp water and measured the resistance at both. Contacts were clean on the old one during the test. It was out of the curve range shown in the Bently manual. I bought a new one, installed it, and, low and behold, the vehicle ran much better.
