Not true. All watercooled North American Vanagons have at least 2 speeds for the radiator fan.

82-85 all models, 2 speeds, with small 2 speed motor, (no external resistor) 86-91 non-A/C, 2 speeds with small 2 speed motor, (no external resistor) 86-91 with A/C, 3 speeds with large single speed motor, 3 speeds created by external resistor, 2 taps 86-91 Syncro non-A/C, 2 speeds with large single speed motor, 2 speeds created by external resistor, 1 tap 96-92 Syncro with A/C, 3 speeds with large single speed motor, 3 speeds created by external resistor, 2 taps

On all models high and low speeds are triggered by the radiator temp switch, with various differing temp settings. On all 86-91 models with A/C a third speed is controlled only by the A/C, medium speed.

So, there are 2 versions of the fan motor, large and small. For large fan motors there are 2 versions of the external resistor, 2 and 3 speed types.

For completeness, let me add that there are 5 versions of the radiator temp switches, 3 versions of the fan shroud, 2 versions of replacement radiators, and 4 versions of the front radiator hoses.

All the above is from memory so if I left something out speak up.
