The gas gauge on our '85 has worked the same as yours since we have had it (about 10 years). I have switched the voltage stabilize for a new one but it made no difference. If I recall there will be other gauges acting up if the stabilizer is bad. If I drop the tank to change the seals and hoses then I will take the time to check out the sending unit.
