One thing that can cause this is a bad ignition switch. I've even known of them working if the key isn't turned "All the way" when trying to start. You might try seeing if it will fire with the key turned just enough, and no more, to activate the starter.

Anyway, the ignition switch should be on the list of things to check for sure.
