I have to admit that my reaction was exactly the same. The rule of the road is generally "keep right except to pass." Therefore, when I drive my Vanagon I live in the right lane a whole lot more than when I drive my Mini Cooper. (This includes stop lights, due to my Vanagon's leisurely rate of acceleration.)

My pet peeve is with those who do not exhibit the same courtesy, and drive slowly in the left lane. This is inconsiderate, potentially dangerous, and illegal in many states. It forces faster drivers to slow down abruptly and/or pass on the right, and even slows down the entire traffic flow behind them if there is a slow driver on the right as well. It seems that this widespread lack of common courtesy is rather unique to the United States; you rarely see slow drivers hogging the left lane in Europe and Canada. If you did it on the Autobahn you'd be rear ended by a Porsche in no time.
