OK but are all o2 sensors the same? I don't see a distinction between
1.9, 2.1, air cooled, etc. on vendor sites.

Anyone know of one I can get over the counter that will work? I want
to salvage this long weekend....

The 1.9 uses a 1 wire sensor; the 2.1 uses a 3 wire.  The extra 2 wires are
the heater, used with Digifant FI.  Ground is the case of the sensor.  An
OEM sensor has the right connector.  If you purchase a universal one, you
need to splice it in, but save money doing so.
