I don't off-road, but I still had some 'shelf dropout' in my '85. I cured
it by pulling the little nails out of the plastic buttons that secure the
shelves and running small screws through them instead. THis keeps the stock
plastic, but sucures it a bit better to the cabinet.

I doubt that fix is sufficient for Alaskan spec. roads, but it may be a
helpful tip for folks in the lower 48.
