Subject: What is the transformer under my rear seat for?

Volks,

I am reassembling my 1986 Syncro Westfalia that was originally a European market vehicle. Under the rear seat on top of the vent where the furnace is, is a transformer and some circuitry that is few by the 230VAC system. Anyone know what this transformer does? Looks like it makes 12VDC as there is a heavier R and BR set of wires going to it. If it does make 12V then what for? To charge the camping battery and run lights? What happens if I feed it 115VAC? I have a 2:1 transformer here that I am debating to install so that the voltage to this transformer and to the fridge will be 230VAC and replace the European plug with a North American plug and have that be at 115VAC. The big question is will 60Hz be an issue?

Cheers!

David Marshall
