The original 3/4 hub installed in pre 89ish/90 vans had 3 square cut notches for the little detents to fit into... The factory upgrade has rounded notches..The square corners of the notches are a stress point and crack with time and cause the typical problem of a 3rd or 4th gear failure. I see these updated slider hubs crack also..not as fast as the original, but the material they are made of is marginally strong Many of us use an aftermarket hub made of gear material so it is better and stronger by far..Don't know which one van cafe sells.. A modified hub for 1st or 2nd is not made nor is there one for the G/R portion. The slider itself gets out of round occasionally and can contribute to popping out of gear, so depending on how worn it is is whether it should be repl or redone...There are many little things inside that can and do wear and no 2 are ever the same..every trans rebuild has its own list of parts depending on the usage or frequency of oil changes..(read...change your trans oil every 30K) Campers or heavy vehicles or modified engines DO wear out the running gear faster...!st and 2nd gears don't wear out as fast due to the facts that they aren't used for as long and the effective gear ratio puts less stress on them...4th takes the worst beating as it's pretty much a direct coupling from eng to wheels...drivers who are on/off the gas will beat up 4th faster.. Like I say..many factors...For cryin out loud, if there is a noise or issue..deal with it if at all possible...Parts for these are getting scarcer and more expensive every month...ring & pinions for syncro's are over a grand from the dealer (if you can get one)..Locker setups are hard to find..not to mention the rigs from the salt on the road ares eat up the outsides of the cases till they are unusable in many cases.. ...all above is my 2 bits worth and opinion for what its worth of course.. What is the update of this part which is sold at van-cafe? Does my 86 syncro has an older version? My problem is slightly hard shifting and bearing noise when the trans is hot. Is it really necessary to replace the operating sleeve? and what about

the ones for 1&2, G&R? What else should be replaced on a typical rebuild? Thanks for any help.
