It boils down to this: With the stock wiring, the headlights will not turn on unless the ignition switch is on. *so* When that stock wiring is used to control the relays (instead of controlling the headlights directly), the *relay* will not turn on unless the ignition switch is on. So you still get no headlights unless the ignition switch is on. The heavy wires for the headlights can go right from the battery to the relays (through fuses, of course), and you still won't get headlights unless the ignition is turned on. The headlights won't go on unless the relay goes on, the relay won't go on unless the ignition switch is on.
