Greetings, I sadly turned the odometer over the 100K mark on my 84 Westy this past weekend. It was sold in 10/83 & manufactured in 8/83. It took the original owner almost 19 years to go 38,500 miles & moi only 4 years to go 61K, mostly on trips around the west & 1 recently to the east coast & back from Salt Lake City. It was serviced by the dealer until at 75K, I decided they knew less about the vanagon than I which was a scary thought. The engine is the original 1.9 w/ the only serious repair work being the heads on original warranty?, new water pump, new starter, new plug wires, muffler & collector pipe, new fuel lines, vanagon syndrome patch, etc. In addition I have gone to Bilstein shocks, & the usual brakes, tires, etc. work over the life of the vanagon. My old vw mechanic keeps joking that at 100K the vanagon will start falling apart! Even so, he says it is in good shape, & doesn't recommend any major or minor repair work to it. Suggestions as to any uber pre-emptive maintenance on it so that it can remain carefree & happy? TIA, Tom B. |
