I actually prefer _real_ candles or a small kerosene lantern burning citronella lamp oil.

Try the tall 99c glass ones found often in stores specializing in Mexican groceries.

Burn pretty cleanly, don't blow out in the wind, and none of those wicked batteries, neither. Smell like citrus and may or may not confuse the bugs.

Lenmar Company makes some pretty good rechargeable 2600 MAH AA cells that unfortunately are NiMH so their output voltage is 1.25. Fine for lighting but not so good for devices that prefer 1.4 Alkaline. A standard Alkaline is 1500MAH.
