The old SA 2.5 gas version is not really the same engine. The SA version was based on the 2.5 that came in 1993 Eurovans here. Longer stroke, smaller bore, single cam. The Jetta 2.5 motor is related to both but quite different, with more power and smoother reving, due to the shorter stroke and DOHC. Hopefully someone will try the actual Jetta 2.5 in a Vanagon and report the results as well as the difficulties. I would like to give one a go myself, once the used engines become available at reasonable prices.
