Article about the evolution of the subaru boxer. No mention of where they got the idea..

[ I believe they still pay a royalty to Porsche for some aspect of the engine design ]

More interesting that VW gave up on the engine design and subaru has gone on to prove it was not quite ready for retirement.

Article finishes noting " Subaru is planning to stick with its boxer engines as the basis of its future models and is currently in the final stages of developing a diesel boxer motor to meet market demand in Europe where over 50 percent of all new cars are now diesel powered.
