One of the common problems people have is with getting the spark plug wires in the right order on the distributor cap. They do not go in simple order. The 2 on the passenger side cross and the 2 on the drivers side don't. If you put them in simple order the engine will pop and backfire but won't run.

If you haven't measured compression since reassembly, do it now. It is very common to get a pushrod hung up on a lifter so one or more valves never closes. If it is an intake valve, it can keep the engine from running but it can still pop and sputter. A compression test will tell you right away if all valves are closing and pinpoint which cylinder(s) have a problem
