Fiber optics? Perhaps for the CAN bus... can't see rays of light going to each sensor or even major components on the engine though - just not cost effective or practical. Last time I checked, the battery doesn't emit light so there has to be a 12V controlled interface somewhere... anything is possible.

I also have high hopes that the new Subaru Diesel will be a bolt on to the existing subaru adapter plate. As I understand it! its vanagon adaptability is a function of whether the subaru diesel uses fiber-optics or wires, wires can be adapted, fiber optics can't (so easily) be adapted to the vanagon. Anyone have any updated information??

I prefer diesel, but I'm following the Zetec conversion. Bernd Jäger (Germany) reports the following l/100 Kms: 1.9L TDI:--8 to 11 ltr/100 kms. V6 TDI: ---10 to 13 ltr/100 kms
