Subject: 86 Vanagon - New Owner - A few Questions.
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed

Hello to folks on the list.

I'm in Michigan but the van grew up in Florida and only came up here last year. The body is rust free but the interior shows twenty years of Florida sun and owner neglect. 84k on the odometer but a carfax says the van was sold at auction back in '89 with a "not actual mileage" on the title.

I purchased the '86 Vanagon last week with a number of problems. The biggest is a bad clutch. I have searched the archives and downloaded the procedure for the replacement. I am not clear on the front seal behind the flywheel and the "shims" mentioned. Would someone clarify the shims? I know they control end play in the crank.

The "OXS" red light on the dash is on. ???

I pulled the plugs and have 165 lbs compression on the right side and 180 lbs on the left.

I have no owner's manual.

Are the CD manuals available on ebay usable? $10 shipped. I hate to pop for a printed manual until I decide if I will keep this beast.

Recommendations on oil, filters, plugs, trans oil, etc.

Thanks for any help.

Bob
