Jake -

Bentley is just flat wrong, at least for the air cooled variety. Air Cooled Vanagons whether equipped with points (Federal) or Hall (California) Ignition utilize the SAME Ignition Wire Sets, which includes the Coil Wire.

From the Factory ETKA:

N013851 - Ignition Cable. This is the bulk Ignition Cable used on the Spark Plugs as well as the Coil Wire.

036 035 281 - Screened Connector at the Distributor Cap. ORIGINALLY used on the both the Spark Plug and Coil Cables, points style or Hall.

NOTE 1: The connector at the coil was the standard brass with a plain boot, again, points style or Hall.

NOTE 2: Replacement Ignition Cable Sets provided by Bosch do not have Screened Connectors of this type, but rather have the standard brass connector with boot. I have used these in my Ex-80 Calif Vanagon and points system Bus/Vans with no problems.

113 035 255A - Spark Plug Connector, 62mm Long, Screened - Cylinders 1 & 3

021 035 255G - Spark Plug Connector, 109mm Long, Screened - Cylinders 2 & 4

All of the above sold as a kit by Bosch, their number 09171 which fits 69-74 Type 4, Bay Window Bus 72-79 and Air Cooled Vanagon 80-83.5. Current Ignition Cable Set is made in Mexico for Bosch and I have had no quality issues, good or bad with it.

If you desire Screened Connectors at the Distributor Cap in your Ignition Cable Set, I believe Bremi in Europe was the manufacturer. Beru was another manufacturer that used Screened Connectors as well. Perhaps Ron/Bus Depot can source them. The only benefit of Screened Connectors is for additional RFI noise shielding for the radio.

Again, there is no difference in the Coil Wire on California or Federal Air Cooled Vanagons.

There is a difference in coils of course, as the Hall Ignition requires a higher voltage coil.
