If you're asking me (Malcolm) then no, there is/was no need to modify the lid of my syncro westy.
FWIW I have a true, proper European Vanagon Perburg carb for sale cheap that will sit on the
proper european air intake manifold without any need for an adapater plate.  I just preferred the
